POCK-I-STAHN

By Steve Benen in The Washington Monthly:
"ONLY ELITISTS CARE ABOUT PRONUNCIATION.... Barack Obama pronounces 'Pakistan' correctly, with a soft 'a,' just like a lot of people who know what they're talking about, including Gen. David Petraeus. Apparently, having completely run out of compelling policy arguments to make, some high-profile conservatives have decided to make this their latest campaign hobbyhorse.
"This came after the National Review's Kathryn Jean Lopez posted an email that argued, '[N]o one in flyover country says Pock-i-stahn. It's annoying.'
"The inanity of what the right decides to whine about never ceases to amaze me. That Obama's pronunciation is accurate is irrelevant. Mispronunciation apparently makes some conservatives feel better about themselves, and raises doubts about candidates who care to get this right. 'Elites' care about country names; real Americans don't."

THE PALIN DEBATE FLOW CHART

From the Daily Kos, via Cynical-C:

SO, McCAINCIENT WANTS TO FIGHT DIRTY...

By Ari Melber, from The Washington Independent:
"When the McCain campaign announced this weekend that it would start attacking Sen. Barack Obama via guilt by association, peddling smears about people he barely knows, I thought the tack would lead to the Keating Five. But I didn’t know it would happen this quickly.
"The Obama campaign swung into action immediately. By the time the Sunday news shows were taping, Democratic surrogates were hitting McCain with opposition research on his associations with extremist, racist groups (Begala) and the Keating Five (Emanuel). Today, of course, camp Obama is pushing a new Keating Economics website, which begins streaming a documentary about McCain’s Keating problem at noon.
"Obama’s campaign has never pushed the Keating button before, so this attack carries an original punch–and is clearly salient given the current financial crisis. Because the scandal involved McCain’s actions in public service, it is more likely to arise during the remaining two debates.
"McCain’s dredging up of Bill Ayers, in contrast, is not only old news but has no link to anything Obama has done in public life. Patrick Ruffini, a Republican operative who worked on Bush’s reelection campaign, said today that McCain’s Ayers attacks are so old that airing them now 'appears desperate.'
"Desperate and risky — given the corrupt skeletons in McCain’s closet."

VP DEBATE

After watching the first half-hour of the debate, I had to get out of the room for a while - I was getting such a headache. One can only listen to the canned Republican mantra for only so long.... Senator Biden did very well, and came across as a very knowledable, likeable man.

QUIRKY? ME?

This is one of Zorro's mommas. I have been tagged by Jen, at My Life with Dogs, to list six quirky things about myself. Hmmm. Where to start....
1. (not necessarily in order of quirkiness) Rearranging items into a certain order or into alignment. Each item on my living room coffee table has a designated spot on the table; if they get moved around, I have to rearrange them. When I take out our vitamins and pills in the morning, each bottle has to be facing the front so one can see the label. Doesn't everyone do that?
2. Not plugging or unplugging any electrical item that does not have an on/off switch (and even a few that do - if the item looks old or worn).
3. Locking my car doors when the car is in the driveway or right outside my office. Hey, it only takes a few second for someone to walk up and take something! Of course, many people tell me that if the car is locked, people will walk up and literally break a window to get in, instead of just opening the door to get in. I guess I'd rather the person have to make at least a little effort to take my stuff.
4. One of the people who started this whole quirky tag game said she picks at her toes. Well, I pick at my the cuticles and skin around my fingernails. I do it more when I'm stressed; so one can really tell what mood I'm in, or how my life in general is going, by looking at my fingernails.
5. I guess one could call me somewhat addicted to The Weather Channel. Hey, I could be addicted to worse things! But I don't like storms - particularly ones with lightning, close lightning. One hears too many freaky stories about how horribly unpredictable lightning can be - and how dangerous. So, when the "screen is green" (or worse, yellow or red) in our area, I unplug everything: TV's, computers, etc. We haven't lost anything to a lightning strike yet!
6. I think this quirk will seem like the least quirky thing to you, but it's a huge thing to me. In 2004, after 30 years on NPR (where he was incredibly popular among both listeners and critics), Morning Edition host Bob Edwards was demoted to "senior correspondent" (whatever that BS means). NPR said that it wanted someone to take the morning show in a "different direction" (more BS).
Shortly thereafter, Bob left NPR. Soon, XM Radio offered Bob his own morning show on the satelite radio network; he remains there today, bringing "his reassuring and authoritative voice" to many listeners around the world each day. When Morning Edition won a George Foster Peabody Award in 1999, the Peabody committee lauded Edwards as "a man who embodies the essence of excellence in radio.... His is a rare radio voice: informed but never smug; intimate but never intrusive; opinionated but never dismissive. Mr. Edwards does not merely talk, he listens."
I have not listened or contributed to NPR since.

McCAIN'S INTEGRITY

From Andrew Sullivan, for TheAtlantic.com:

Editor's Note: Historically a John McCain supporter, conservative journalist and blogger Andrew Sullivan takes on the issue of John McCain's integrity as he strives to win the presidency. - vh/TO

"For me, this surreal moment - like the entire surrealism of the past ten days - is not really about Sarah Palin or Barack Obama or pigs or fish or lipstick. It's about John McCain. The one thing I always thought I knew about him is that he is a decent and honest person. When he knows, as every sane person must, that Obama did not in any conceivable sense mean that Sarah Palin is a pig, what did he do? Did he come out and say so and end this charade? Or did he acquiesce in and thereby enable the mindless Rovianism that is now the core feature of his campaign?
"So far, he has let us all down. My guess is he will continue to do so. And that decision, for my part, ends whatever respect I once had for him. On core moral issues, where this man knew what the right thing was, and had to pick between good and evil, he chose evil. When he knew that George W. Bush's war in Iraq was a fiasco and catastrophe, and before Donald Rumsfeld quit, McCain endorsed George W. Bush against his fellow Vietnam vet, John Kerry in 2004. By that decision, McCain lost any credibility that he can ever put country first. He put party first and his own career first ahead of what he knew was best for the country.
"And when the Senate and House voted overwhelmingly to condemn and end the torture regime of Bush and Cheney in 2006, McCain again had a clear choice between good and evil, and chose evil.
"He capitulated and enshrined torture as the policy of the United States, by allowing the CIA to use techniques as bad as and worse than the torture inflicted on him in Vietnam. He gave the war criminals in the White House retroactive immunity against the prosecution they so richly deserve. The enormity of this moral betrayal, this betrayal of his country's honor, has yet to sink in. But for my part, it now makes much more sense. He is not the man I thought he was.
"And when he had the chance to engage in a real and substantive debate against the most talented politician of the next generation in a fall campaign where vital issues are at stake, what did McCain do? He began his general campaign with a series of grotesque, trivial and absurd MTV-style attacks on Obama's virtues and implied disgusting things about his opponent's patriotism.
"And then, because he could see he was going to lose, ten days ago, he threw caution to the wind and with no vetting whatsoever, picked a woman who, by her decision to endure her own eight-month pregnancy of a Down Syndrome child in public, that he was going to reignite the culture war as a last stand against Obama. That's all that is happening right now: a massive bump in the enthusiasm of the Christianist base. This is pure Rove.
"Yes, McCain made a decision that revealed many appalling things about him. In the end, his final concern is not national security. No one who cares about national security would pick as vice-president someone who knows nothing about it as his replacement. No one who cares about this country's safety would gamble the security of the world on a total unknown because she polled well with the Christianist base. No person who truly believed that the surge was integral to this country's national security would pick as his veep candidate a woman who, so far as we can tell anything, opposed it at the time.
"McCain has demonstrated in the last two months that he does not have the character to be president of the United States. And that is why it is more important than ever to ensure that Barack Obama is the next president. The alternative is now unthinkable. And McCain - no one else - has proved it."

HAPPY GOTCHA DAY, JORDAN!

Jordan has been with us since Labor Day weekend, in 1998. The day was very hot, and he was very thirsty. My mommas gave him water, and looked him over. He's a very handsome boy.
He and my brother, Grover, became bestest friends. When I came to live with my Mommas, Jordan was good to me, but he wasn't pals with me like he was with Grover. Jordan is now close to 12 years old; he's as handsome and good and gentle as ever. Jordan is a friend to all animals and people. We love you, Jman, and we're glad you're part of our family.

PALIN: WRONG WOMAN, WRONG MESSAGE

Opinion piece by Gloria Steinam, in the Los Angeles Times:
"Here's the good news: Women have become so politically powerful that even the anti-feminist right wing -- the folks with a headlock on the Republican Party -- are trying to appease the gender gap with a first-ever female vice president. We owe this to women -- and to many men too -- who have picketed, gone on hunger strikes or confronted violence at the polls so women can vote. We owe it to Shirley Chisholm, who first took the "white-male-only" sign off the White House, and to Hillary Rodham Clinton, who hung in there through ridicule and misogyny to win 18 million votes.
"But here is even better news: It won't work. This isn't the first time a boss has picked an unqualified woman just because she agrees with him and opposes everything most other women want and need. Feminism has never been about getting a job for one woman. It's about making life more fair for women everywhere. It's not about a piece of the existing pie; there are too many of us for that. It's about baking a new pie.
"Selecting Sarah Palin, who was touted all summer by Rush Limbaugh, is no way to attract most women, including die-hard Clinton supporters. Palin shares nothing but a chromosome with Clinton. Her down-home, divisive and deceptive speech did nothing to cosmeticize a Republican convention that has more than twice as many male delegates as female, a presidential candidate who is owned and operated by the right wing and a platform that opposes pretty much everything Clinton's candidacy stood for -- and that Barack Obama's still does. To vote in protest for McCain/Palin would be like saying, "Somebody stole my shoes, so I'll amputate my legs."
"This is not to beat up on Palin. I defend her right to be wrong, even on issues that matter most to me. I regret that people say she can't do the job because she has children in need of care, especially if they wouldn't say the same about a father. I get no pleasure from imagining her in the spotlight on national and foreign policy issues about which she has zero background, with one month to learn to compete with Sen. Joe Biden's 37 years' experience.
"Palin has been honest about what she doesn't know. When asked last month about the vice presidency, she said, 'I still can't answer that question until someone answers for me: What is it exactly that the VP does every day?' When asked about Iraq, she said, 'I haven't really focused much on the war in Iraq.'
"She was elected governor largely because the incumbent was unpopular, and she's won over Alaskans mostly by using unprecedented oil wealth to give a $1,200 rebate to every resident. Now she is being praised by McCain's campaign as a tax cutter, despite the fact that Alaska has no state income or sales tax. Perhaps McCain has opposed affirmative action for so long that he doesn't know it's about inviting more people to meet standards, not lowering them. Or perhaps McCain is following the Bush administration habit, as in the Justice Department, of putting a job candidate's views on 'God, guns and gays' ahead of competence. The difference is that McCain is filling a job one 72-year-old heartbeat away from the presidency.
"So let's be clear: The culprit is John McCain."

ANDREW SULLIVAN ON PRESIDENTIAL JUDGEMENT

From Andrew Sullivan of TheAtlantic.com:
"We have had two big presidential decisions from both candidates - the first time we can clearly judge their decision-making skills. Obama's (vice presidential decision) was prudent, cautious, thoroughly vetted, and serious about governing. McCain's was impulsive, rash, barely vetted and decided at the last minute by a small coterie that left everyone else gasping.
"We are at war. Another 9/11 is possible. Israel may attack Iran. Pakistan may go up in smoke. Putin may invade another country. Who would you rather have as president?"

OBAMA PICKS JOE BIDEN

From The Huffington Post:
Barack Obama named Sen. Joe Biden of Delaware as his vice presidential running mate early Saturday, balancing his ticket with a seasoned congressional veteran well-versed in foreign policy and defense issues.
Obama announced the pick on his Web site with a photo of the two men and an appeal for donations. A text message went out shortly afterward that said, "Barack has chosen Senator Joe Biden to be our VP nominee."

LIVI'S GOTCHA DAY

Happy Gotcha Day to my sister, Livi! She's been with us for one year. Unlike most other new pets, Livi seemed to fit in and know she belonged here from the start; and everyone gets along with her. She is a good sister to all!
Tonight, we'll celebrate with Frosty Paws and a new toy (an AKC goose - shhhh, don't tell!).

BE CAREFUL WHAT YOU WISH FOR

From The Peace Train:
"John McCain practically dared Barack Obama to go to Iraq, and he did, with a vengeance. He has been on a world tour, going to three key areas Iraq and Afghanistan, where US troops are fighting; to Europe, location of America’s principal allies; and the Middle East, where America has a fundamental commitment to Israel and to regional peace. By most accounts, the trip has been a huge success. Obama has seemed presidential, and has been treated as a world leader in world capitals. Media coverage has been very positive and extensive, and he has not made any serious mistakes that could undermine his foreign policy credentials.
"If the McCain camp expected an Obama trip overseas would highlight the Democratic candidate's inexperience in foreign policy, the strategy may have backfired. From Kabul to Baghdad, and now onto Jordan, Israel, Britain, France and Germany, Barack Obama's first international trip since becoming the Democratic presidential nominee is being covered by the media like a world tour for a popularly elected leader. There is no preparation for the position of President of the United States. We have already proven that a man (GW Bush) with absolutely no preparation at all, a man who ducked his National Guard duty in 1972, whose closest encounter with team sports was "cheerleader," who bankrupted four oil companies, cannot speak coherently without a teleprompter or back stage prompter via earphone, can be president.
"Now some worry that Barak Obama, an articulate man with brains and ability, who actually cuts a presidential appearance and can speak of national concerns on the world stage without a staged, hand-picked audience, isn't up to the job."

FREECYCLE IT

By Sally Deneen, from TheDailyGreen:
"Let’s say you have a perfectly good fish tank or swing set or computer you no longer want, but it’s too much of a hassle to drag it to a thrift store – where it may be turned away, anyway.
A fun way to find new homes for stuff is posting your items at Freecycle.org, a grassroots, volunteer-driven Internet movement committed to the notion that one person's trash is another person's treasure. Think of it as an on-line message center that connects people who want to get rid of stuff with those who can use it. Members of the free web site can give and receive items for free.
"It’s a "free cycle" of giving, which keeps good things out of landfills, reduces waste and saves resources. Begun in 2003 when Deron Beal sent out an e-mail announcing the Freecycle Network to about 30 or 40 friends and a handful of nonprofit organizations in Tucson, the Arizona-based nonprofit organization since has spread around the world. So far, there are more than 4,000 local Freecycle Network groups (reachable via Freecycle.org). Among rules: All items must be completely free with no strings attached. No illegal or adult-themed materials are allowed.
"No item is too big or too small to post at Freecycle. Offerings have included comforters, beds, mattresses, a 10-year-old glider rocker that rocks smoothly but its arm joints are broken, a working dryer, clothing of all kinds, a satellite dish, Halloween costumes, jogging strollers, file cabinets, computer stuff, picture frames, vases, kids’ stuff, an avocado green refrigerator that must be picked up the next day, coupons for infant formula… You get the idea. Imagine if all of that ended up at the dump. The network estimates that it’s daily keeping more than 300 tons of stuff out of landfills.
"If you’re in the market for an item, you can browse the listings or tell the community what you’re seeking. You never know what people have tucked in the attic. You sure can’t beat free! "

SPEAK UP!

"In Germany, they came first for the Communists, and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a Communist. Then they came for the Jews, and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a Jew. Then they came for the trade unionists, and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a trade unionist. Then they came for the Catholics, and I didn't speak up because I was a Protestant. Then they came for me, and by that time no one was left to speak up." ~ Martin Niemoeller, German Protestant Clergyman

THE LIGHTER SIDE OF POLITICS 2008

Despite the seriousness of the coming election, JibJab nails the quirkier aspects of the campaign... and life.

LIAR, LIAR

From ThePoliticalCat:
"How many flip-flops has John McCaincient made? Anybody know? Yes, hello? Wanna take a guess? Sixty-one is the current count, folks. Yup, that's right. SIXTY-ONE flip-flops. You can bet his good buddies in the mainstream media haven't covered more than a handful. Alternet details them. No peeking, now! HAPPY GOTCHA DAY, MORRY!

We'll be celebrating my brother Morry's Gotcha Day this weekend. We'll have treats (sugar-free for me), and he will get a toy and extra hugs and belly rubs!
All this for a doggy who started out as a stray in Chicago. He was then transferred to the QCAWC, a no-kill shelter in northwestern Illinois. My momma saw his picture on their web site; they called him a Corgi-Chow-mix. (He certainly has the short legs of us Corgis, and the big, orange-red fur of the Chow-Chows.) His bio said that he should not be around any other dogs or cats.
Welp, my momma visited him, and he seemed to be a "sweetheart;" but she could tell that he became very riled up when he saw other dogs. So my momma decided to bring me to meet and visit him; she also brought a pocket full of treats. Within 15 minutes, we were able to be eating our treats side by side. I think he could tell I'm alpha to every doggy I ever meet.
Momma took me out there two or three more times until she decided he was ready to bring home.
It took a while for him to get use to Rya and Jordan; he spent quite a bit of time on a leash, at first, getting corrected when he was getting agressive. But finally, he understood that he would get his food and his treats, and get loved even when the other dogs were nearby.
Now, he's the official watch doggy of the family. His favorite spot is on the living room couch, watching the front yard and the street, making sure that no other dogs, cats, or squirrels walk past without a warning.

WORLD'S DUMBEST PERSON?

From Dispatches from the Culture Wars:
"Found this via Pam's House Blend, which got it from Blogger Interrupted. This clueless woman from Medina, Ohio got on local TV saying that she thinks Obama is an "Arab" - not a Muslim, mind you, an Arab. So this guy from Blogger Interrupted found the woman and talked to her, not once but twice. He showed her information that Obama is, in fact, a Christian and that he has nothing at all to do with the Arab world and you have to watch her babble idiotically to justify it. "Video below:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MxOSO07QDNU
"But the sad fact is that this is not the dumbest person alive; this is about par for the course. She's pretty much an average American - utterly ignorant, entirely incapable of thinking rationally or honestly and blissfully unaware of either of those things. This is the person you run into at the grocery store every day. They may be perfectly nice people, but they are perfect examples of virulent ignorance. "

JOHN McCAIN'S FAMILY VALUES

From Badtux the Snarky Penguin:

"When he came home from Vietnam to find that his wife was disabled, John McCain divorced her and married an heiress twenty years his junior. H. Ross Perot, who paid Carol McCain's medical bills all those years ago while McCain was a POW, now believes that both Carol McCain and the American people have been taken in by a man who is unusually slick and cruel – even by the standards of modern politics.
"'McCain is the classic opportunist. He’s always reaching for attention and glory," he said.
"'After he came home, Carol walked with a limp. So he threw her over for a poster girl with big money from Arizona. And the rest is history.'"

Republican family values, yessiree.

From Al Gore's endorsement:
"From now through Election Day, I intend to do whatever I can to make sure he is elected President of the United States.
"Over the next four years, we are going to face many difficult challenges -- including bringing our troops home from Iraq, fixing our economy, and solving the climate crisis. Barack Obama is clearly the candidate best able to solve these problems and bring change to America."

DIABETES Part 6

Welp, my mommas had me to the doctor last week, for a blood test. We got the results this week; I have to get 15 units of insulin, two times per day. That's up from 12.5 units a couple of months ago.
My momma was surprised, because I had not been having any noticable problems. She hopes that I will stay at this new level for a while.

AND THE WINNER IS...

Obama-man has changed the course of American history. He has clinched the Democratic nomination, crossing the critical delegate mark, becoming the first African-American nominee for President. Woo Hoo!
From the text of Obama's prepared remarks at his June 3 rally in St.Paul: "Sixteen months have passed since we first stood together on the steps of the Old State Capitol in Springfield, Illinois. Thousands of miles have been traveled. Millions of voices have been heard. And because of what you said - because you decided that change must come to Washington; because you believed that this year must be different than all the rest; because you chose to listen not to your doubts or your fears but to your greatest hopes and highest aspirations, tonight we mark the end of one historic journey with the beginning of another - a journey that will bring a new and better day to America. Tonight, I can stand before you and say that I will be the Democratic nominee for president of the United States."

NEW CRUMBDROPPER

My mommas have a new grandson, Adam. He was born yesterday, and is a big guy at 9 pounds, 9 ounces, and 22.5 inches long. Can you imagine the amount of food he's going to need? He's going to be a major crumbdropper. I am going to totally score treats whenever he comes to visit! That will nearly make up for all the noise and nasty smells!

THE WOLF INSIDE US

This post is from the blog Serenity's Journal:
Native Americans have a story of a grandfather walking with his grandson.
The boy asks why there is hatred, evil, violence, and broken promises in the world. The grandfather replies, "The answer lies within. Deep inside each of us is a fight between two wolves. One is evil: He is anger, envy, sorrow, regret, greed, arrogance, self-pity, guilt. The other wolf is good: He is joy, peace, love, hope, serenity, humility, kindness, generosity, truth, compassion, and faith. This fight between the two wolves is going on inside of you and inside everybody."
The grandson thinks for a moment and then asks his grandfather, "Which wolf will win?"
The old Cherokee simply replied, "The one that you feed."

CRUNCH!

My momma's two-month old Prius got rear-ended yesterday afternoon. Grrrrrrr! She was on her way home, to pick up my brother Morry for a vet appointment. She was stopped at a traffic light, in a long line of cars. When the light turned green, the front cars started to move, but the ones by her hadn't started to move yet - except for the stupid guy behind her! Grrrrrrr! She had to wait nearly 45 minutes for the police to arrive, but at least the cop was very nice.
Now, my momma has to hassle with the insurance and rental car while her car is getting fixed. Grrrrrr!
If I'd been with her when it happened, I would have bitten that stupid guy in his fat ankles! Grrrrrrr!

EDWARDS ENDORSES OBAMA

From the Associated Press:
"Democrat John Edwards endorsed former rival Barack Obama on Wednesday, a move designed to help solidify support for the party's likely presidential nominee even as Hillary Rodham Clinton refuses to give up her long-shot candidacy.
"The endorsement came a day after Clinton defeated Obama by more than 2-to-1 in the West Virginia primary. The loss highlighted Obama's challenge in winning over the "Hillary Democrats" _ white, working-class voters who also supported Edwards in significant numbers before he exited the race in late January.
"Edwards, who received a thunderous ovation when Obama introduced him to a crowd of several thousand, said, "brothers and sisters, we must come together as Democrats" to defeat McCain. "We are here tonight because the Democratic voters have made their choice, and so have I."

PANIC ATTACK: GOP'S NEW SLOGAN

From Jason Linkins, The Huffington Post:
"Leave it to the tone deaf GOP to find a way of attaching themselves to this election cycle's 'change' mandate that simultaneously reinforces the fact that their failed policies have messed up the world to such an inhuman extent that many Americans now live their daily lives in a state of free-floating panic and paralyzing anxiety.
"In today's New York Times' Caucus blog, Carl Hulse reports that House Republicans have got themselves a brand-new slogan: 'It looks like Republicans will counter the Democratic push for change from the years of the Bush administration with their own pledge to deliver, drum roll please, 'the change you deserve.' The first element of the party agenda developed over the past few months by the leadership and select party members will focus on family issues.
'Through our 'Change You Deserve' message and through our 'American Families Agenda,' House Republicans will continue our efforts to speak directly to an American public looking for leaders who will offer real solutions for the challenges they confront every day,' said the memo prepared for lawmakers.'
"What the GOP doesn't seem to realize, because they are idiots, is that 'the change you deserve' is the registered advertising slogan of Effexor XR, a drug that many of you might have started taking as a result of all the...you know -- terrorism. Effexor, also known as Venlafaxine, is approved for the treatment 'of depression, generalized anxiety disorder, social anxiety disorder, and panic disorder in adults.' Its common side effects are very much in keeping with the world the House Republicans have striven to build: nausea, apathy, constipation, fatigue, vertigo, sexual dysfunction, sweating, memory loss, and - and I swear I am not making this up - 'electric shock-like sensations also called 'brain zaps.'
"Its less common side effects are equally awesome in their appropriateness.
"And when the Food And Drug Administration reviewed the ad copy that included the tagline, 'The change you deserve,' it took issue with Wyeth Pharmaceuticals, which manufactures Effexor, saying that the company made 'unsubstantiated superiority claims.' Sounds like the GOP have picked an ironically accurate tagline for their efforts!"

LILLY'S DILEMMA

From Susan Estrich of Creators.com:
Lilly Ledbetter was nearing 60 and on the verge of retirement when someone sent her an anonymous letter telling her that for the preceding 19 years, she'd been earning less than her male counterparts at Goodyear Tire and Rubber. On the day she started work as a supervisor in 1979, she was paid the same as men in the same job. But by 1998, when that letter arrived and Lilly consulted a lawyer, she was making $15,000 a year less than a man with the same experience doing the same job.
So she sued.
A federal jury found that over the course of her career, she lost out on upward of a quarter of a million dollars in pay because of discrimination, and the jury awarded her interest and penalties that brought the award to almost $4 million. The judge reduced the award to $360,000. The Supreme Court, by a 5-4 vote, got rid of it entirely.
Lilly's failing, in their mind, was that she should have sued back in 1980, when her pay started falling behind that of her male counterpart. According to the law as read by the Court, she had only 180 days to complain about discriminatory pay or she was stuck with it. By the time she filed suit in 1998, the first 18 years of being shafted didn't count anymore, and the last 180 days — the only time period the five men on the Court who voted against her thought could be counted — was just the residue of the way things had been done all those years, not some new and intentional effort to pay her less. Business as usual. No recovery.
This week, the Senate failed in its effort to overrule that particular decision of the Supreme Court.

At a time when women, no matter what their education, job classification, experience or ability, still earn on average 77 cents for every dollar men earn, Republican presidential candidate John McCain skipped the vote. But he took time to make clear that he opposes the bill because he thinks government has no business telling employers they will be held responsible for underpaying women unless those women complain about it in the first 180 days. By a 56-42 vote (60 votes are required by Senate rules to cut off debate), the Republican minority voted to protect business at the expense of working women.
Too many lawsuits, McCain said.
Too much discrimination, I would say.
There are some who believe Democrats are doing everything they can to hand this election over to the Republican in what should be a Democratic year. But Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama both took time from their campaigns to go back to Washington to vote for Lilly Ledbetter and the millions of women who know they are being shafted at work, but don't have the evidence — at least not within 180 days of the shafting — to prove it. McCain only took the time to say he would have voted against her.
It's the sort of vote women may remember, or be reminded of, when November comes around. Equal pay for equal work doesn't mean a whole lot if you don't have the ability to enforce it. Ultimately, politics and elections often come down to whose side you're on. John McCain made that clear this week. It may yet come back to haunt him. Some of those women he forgot about when he skipped the vote on Lilly Ledbetter may remember that, and not skip their turn to vote in November.

HAPPY EARTH DAY

Today, try to be more conscious of the items you throw away. Can they be reused? If not, can they be recycled? Could you have done without this item (or something similar, but more earth-friendly) in the first place? So often, being more earth-friendly is just being more conscious and aware - instead of just going through the same old motions each day.
Happy Earth Day! Renew. Reuse. Recycle.

THEFT - Part 2 & CONTEST

Yesterday, a big, long package came for my momma. It contained our new Obama sign (just like the one pictured in the previous post) and a couple of bumper stickers (momma's original sticker ripped when she changed cars). So, my momma put her new bumper sticker on last night, and is going to put up the new sign this morning.
We had the original sign for a couple of months before it was stolen. Care to guess how long you think it will be before the new sign gets taken or damaged beyond repair? The person whose guess is closest to the actual amount of time will have their name mentioned in this blog and will win a small prize. Warning: Guesses, by people involved in the next disappearance or mutilation of the sign, will not win.

THEFT

Boy, are my mommas mad! Somebody stole their Obama yard sign! My momma ordered it online, and waited nearly six weeks for it to arrive! My momma said she's going to order another, but who knows when it will get here.... Bummer.

ON THE ROAD LOOKING FOR TYPOS

From TheDartmouth:
"Jeff Deck is best described as a 'grammar vigilante.' Deck, armed with his 'typo correction kit' — which consists of permanent and dry-erase markers, several types of Wite-Out, chalk, pens and crayons — set off on an odyssey of typographical nit-picking to rectify grammatical injustices about one month ago.
"We're basically going around the country finding spelling and grammatical errors and attempting to fix them," Deck said. "Some of the things we find we’ll just fix on our own, but we find someone if we can and see if we can get their permission to fix it.
"Along the way, Deck and his various accomplices — collectively known as the Typo Elimination Advancement League — have recorded their adventures on the group’s web site. The site conveniently displays a hand-drawn map of the United States, with the group’s travel route represented by a series of connected dots that most recently stopped in San Luis Obispo, Calif. Each town has a blog entry with photos of comically inappropriate signs, and, if the group was successful, their subsequent corrections.
"Deck, who says he has always had a 'knack for spelling,' honed his skills as a former Opinion Editor and humor columnist for The Dartmouth, and as an editor for an academic publishing house in Washington, D.C.
"'About a year ago, I realized that I had never quite shaken my editor’s habits — I had internalized the Chicago Manual of Style,' Deck said. 'I realized I still had it with me, as well as my typo-spotting eye…and thought it would be a good thing to go around raising awareness.'"
"Over the course of the expedition, the group has encountered typos big and small, sometimes risking personal safety to correct grammatical mishaps.
"Deck’s journey will conclude when he arrives home in Massachusetts, at which point he will return to his apartment and “feel complete,” he said.
"In the end, though, the encounters with 'grocerry stores, US hellicopter helmets, [and] homemade deserts' have opened the public’s eyes to the problem of grammatical incorrectness."

DOGGIE DAY SPA Part 2

OK, I got shaved today. And of course, the temperature dropped today, so now, I'm freezing my Corgi butt! And so is Morry! Butt (neatly trimmed!), I have to admit I look particularly handsome and well-groomed! I guess I can put up with being cold as long as everyone is making a big deal over my extreme handsomeness!

4.02.2008

DOGGIE DAY SPA

Morry and I have to go to the doggie day spa tomorrow. My momma said that we are going to get our hair "cut;" but I heard my other momma say something about "shaving." Doesn't she know it's too cold outside to get shaved? We are going to freeze our little Corgi butts! Please help us convince our mommas to just have us get a trim!

COOL CATS

Some of our cats are pretty cool! Greta is an amazing doggy-wannabe! Nealee is able to fly with just one arm! Hector is a great big brother to Nealee. Baggins is about the biggest cat I've ever seen; he's nearly my size!
But the cats in the following video are pretty cool too! They made me laugh out loud!

TRIVIA

Well, March is almost over, and my April Trivia Challenge will begin on Tuesday. If you are intersted in changing any of the categories (I know, Literature has too many Dark Tower questions!), let me know. I may have my momma help me put a poll on the site, to give you a chance to vote.
Thanks for playing trivia here! I hope you're having fun with it!

PS We did it! Please give us your Trivia input by participating in the poll at the right! Or, you may leave your comments on this post. ZZ

DIABETES Part 5

Well, my momma said I was a bad boy yesterday afternoon. My momma left the cupboard door open when she took out my girlfriend Cassie's Easter treats. My momma and her momma talked for a while about the weather and that Spring really needed to get in gear.
When my momma came inside, she saw the cupboard door open, and saw me drinking lots of water. Did I mention that the cupboard is the one where she keeps my doggie food? Momma was very disgusted with herself.
Anyway, the rest of the afternoon, I needed to go out to potty about every hour; and I had a couple of accidents in the house. I was very restless and my mommas could tell that I didn't feel good. Plus I was drinking constantly.
By supper time, momma didn't know how much (if any) doggie food she should give me because she didn't know how much I had eaten; same thing with the insulin. So she gave me about a third of the normal amount of food, and the regular amount of insulin.
During the night, I had to go out every hour and a half or so. I had to go so badly that one time I just peed on the dining room floor while momma was opening the door.
It's now about an hour before we would normally get up. My momma stayed downstairs, hoping that everyone else would be able to get some sleep. My momma is glad we will all be home this morning so that she can keep an eye on me. The blood sugar should level out soon. I just want to feel better and get some sleep.

HAPPY EASTER!

FIVE YEARS LATER

Excerpted from a blog post by Barack Obama:
"Five years ago, President George W. Bush launched a war that should never have been authorized based on faulty premises and bad intelligence.
"This war has now lasted longer than World War I, World War II, or the Civil War.
"Nearly four thousand Americans have given their lives. Thousands more have been wounded. Even under the best-case scenarios, this war will cost American taxpayers well over a trillion dollars.
"And where are we for all of this sacrifice?
"We are less safe and less able to shape events abroad. We are divided at home, and our alliances around the world have been strained. The threats of a new century have roiled the waters of peace and stability, and yet America remains anchored in Iraq."

MR. OBAMA'S PROFILE IN COURAGE

An editorial from today's New York Times:
"There are moments - increasingly rare in risk-abhorrent modern campaigns - when politicians are called upon to bare their fundamental beliefs. In the best of these moments, the speaker does not just salve the current political wound, but also illuminates larger, troubling issues that the nation is wrestling with.
"Inaugural addresses by Abraham Lincoln and Franklin D. Roosevelt come to mind, as does John F. Kennedy's 1960 speech on religion, with its enduring vision of the separation between church and state. Senator Barack Obama, who has not faced such tests of character this year, faced one on Tuesday. It is hard to imagine how he could have handled it better.
"Mr. Obama had to address race and religion, the two most toxic subjects in politics. He was as powerful and frank as Mitt Romney was weak and calculating earlier this year in his attempt to persuade the religious right that his Mormonism is Christian enough for them.
"It was not a moment to which Mr. Obama came easily. He hesitated uncomfortably long in dealing with the controversial remarks of his spiritual mentor and former pastor, the Rev. Jeremiah A. Wright Jr., who denounced the United States as endemically racist, murderous and corrupt.
"On Tuesday, Mr. Obama drew a bright line between his religious connection with Mr. Wright, which should be none of the voters' business, and having a political connection, which would be very much their business. The distinction seems especially urgent after seven years of a president who has worked to blur the line between church and state.
"Mr. Obama acknowledged his strong ties to Mr. Wright. He embraced him as the man "who helped introduce me to my Christian faith," and said that "as imperfect as he may be, he has been like family to me."
"Wisely, he did not claim to be unaware of Mr. Wright's radicalism or bitterness, disarming the speculation about whether he personally heard the longtime pastor of his church speak the words being played and replayed on YouTube. Mr. Obama said Mr. Wright's comments were not just potentially offensive, as politicians are apt to do, but "rightly offend white and black alike" and are wrong in their analysis of America. But, he said, many Americans "have heard remarks from your pastors, priests or rabbis with which you strongly disagree."
"Mr. Obama's eloquent speech should end the debate over his ties to Mr. Wright since there is nothing to suggest that he would carry religion into government. But he did not stop there. He put Mr. Wright, his beliefs and the reaction to them into the larger context of race relations with an honesty seldom heard in public life.
"Mr. Obama spoke of the nation's ugly racial history, which started with slavery and Jim Crow, and continues today in racial segregation, the school achievement gap and discrimination in everything from banking services to law enforcement.
"He did not hide from the often-unspoken reality that people on both sides of the color line are angry. "For the men and women of Reverend Wright's generation," he said, "the memories of humiliation and fear have not gone away, nor the anger and the bitterness of those years."
"At the same time, many white Americans, Mr. Obama noted, do not feel privileged by their race. "In an era of stagnant wages and global competition, opportunity comes to be seen as a zero-sum game," he said, adding that both sides must acknowledge that the other's grievances are not imaginary.
"He made the powerful point that while these feelings are not always voiced publicly, they are used in politics. "Anger over welfare and affirmative action helped forge the Reagan coalition," he said.
"Against this backdrop, he said, he could not repudiate his pastor. "I can no more disown him than I can disown the black community," he said. "I can no more disown him than I can my white grandmother." That woman whom he loves deeply, he said, "once confessed her fear of black men who passed by her on the street" and more than once "uttered racial or ethnic stereotypes that made me cringe."
"There have been times when we wondered what Mr. Obama meant when he talked about rising above traditional divides. This was not such a moment.
"We can't know how effective Mr. Obama's words will be with those who will not draw the distinctions between faith and politics that he drew, or who will reject his frank talk about race. What is evident, though, is that he not only cleared the air over a particular controversy - he raised the discussion to a higher plane."

PRIUS DASHBOARD

My momma says the dashboard of her new car is amazing. There is a touch monitor on which she can see the real-time fuel consumption and other energy info, audio info, climate info, navigation info, hands-free BlueTooth info. She says that there is so much going on, she'll probably have an accident while monitoring all the information (which translates as playing with all the toys).

3.13.2008

NEW CAR TOMORROW

Well, one of my mommas went and bought a Toyota Prius today. She said it's a green car, but she also said it's silver.... I'm confused. I guess I don't care as long as the color will compliment my Corgi handsomeness.
Momma will pick up her new car after work tomorrow. I hope she will take me for a ride (but not to the vet!) when she gets home. I will look so cool! I'll have my momma take my picture so you can see how handsome I look!

BEST GREEN CAR OF THE YEAR

The gas/electric Toyota Prius hybrid retains its lock on this category for the fifth straight year.
Consumer Reports' Top Picks must meet these stringent requirements:
Road tests: Each Top Pick scores at or near the top of its category among more than 260 vehicles they have recently tested at their Auto Test Center.
Reliability: Each has an average or better predicted-reliability Rating, based on the problems subscribers reported on almost 1.3 million vehicles in their Annual Car Reliability Survey.
Safety: Top Picks have performed adequately in overall safety if tested by the government or the insurance industry. Starting this year, they also must provide a critical safety feature, electronic stability control (ESC), either as standard equipment or as a readily available option.
Despite a wave of new hybrid models, the Prius’ 44 mpg overall is still the best CR has measured in any five-passenger car. The interior is roomy and versatile, and the Prius has been very reliable.

BREAKING THE LAST RULE

In a 3/7/08 editorial for The Huffington Post, Gary Hart wrote,
"It will come as a surprise to many people that there are rules in politics. Most of those rules are unwritten and are based on common understandings, acceptable practices, and the best interest of the political party a candidate seeks to lead. One of those rules is this: Do not provide ammunition to the opposition party that can be used to destroy your party's nominee. This is a hyper-truth where the presidential contest is concerned.
"By saying that only she and John McCain are qualified to lead the country, particularly in times of crisis, Hillary Clinton has broken that rule, severely damaged the Democratic candidate who may well be the party's nominee, and, perhaps most ominously, revealed the unlimited lengths to which she will go to achieve power. She has essentially said that the Democratic party deserves to lose unless it nominates her.
"As a veteran of red telephone ads and 'where's the beef' cleverness, I am keenly aware that sharp elbows get thrown by those trailing in the fourth quarter (and sometimes even earlier). "'Politics ain't beanbag,' is the old slogan. But that does not mean that it must also be rule-or-ruin, me-first-and-only-me, my way or the highway. That is not politics. That is raw, unrestrained ambition for power that cannot accept the will of the voters.
"Senator Obama is right to say the issue is judgment, not years in Washington. If Mrs. Clinton loses the nomination, her failure will be traced to the date she voted to empower George W. Bush to invade Iraq. That is not the kind of judgment, or wisdom, required by the leader answering the phone in the night. For her now to claim that Senator Obama is not qualified to answer the crisis phone is the height of irony if not chutzpah, and calls into question whether her primary loyalty is to the Democratic party and the nation or to her own ambition."

WE NEED TO CHANGE OUR MESSAGE TO YOUNG GAY PEOPLE

My mommas found this video on my brudder's blog this morning. The story in the video (from the Ellen Show) is very sad. My mommas hope that if even one person learns from this video, and changes their message, the world will be a better place for all people.

DIABETES Part 4 (continued)

Well my vet called today, to say that my sugar levels for the last two weeks were pretty good! He wants my mommas to increase my insulin from 12 units to 12.5 units; not much of a difference. I could have told him I was feeling a lot better, if he'd asked me. People are so odd sometimes.
Anyway, I thought this good news would result in some celebratory treats at my house. Didn't happen, though; my momma said that "we're not going to wreck your good results by adding more treats to your diet." Hmmm; I'll have to figure out a way to get back at her for this!

3.01.2008

DIABETES Part 4

I had to go to the vet on Wednesday, to have some blood drawn for a test that will show my average sugar levels for the last two weeks. While I was there, I also had blood drawn for my annual heart worm check. Doctor Whisler had a tough time getting much blood from my arm; finally, he tried the other arm. Again, not much luck. All this took a while; and everyone was completely and totally charmed by my good manners and cooperation and, of course, my handsomeness. All the assistants kept offering me treats for being such a good, sweet boy. What can I say....
My sister Livi went with me. She also had her heartworm test and her kennelcough shot. She was good too, but I could tell that she was more scared than I. In order to try to help her, I barked the entire time they worked on her. I' sure that made Livi feel much safer.
We should get my test results back this week.

STRIKE!

It doesn't seem that we hear about strikes as often as we used to. Part of that is due to organizations that bring construction unions, for example, and contractors together - often before the issues get to the strike stage. The parties work issues out before the contracts are settled so that there are fewer surprises later on. Everyone gives a little, but everyone wins in the long run because strikes cost everyone money, time, hard feelings, etc.
I am not in a union; I don't think I have ever been directly affected by a strike. But I have great respect for people who are willing to go on strike for what they believe - expecially after they have tried to work on the issues through mediation. Striking can't be easy - standing outside in all sorts of weather; being yelled at by people who are inconvenienced by the strike; worrying about their jobs, their benefits, and their paychecks.
And for what? To get rich? Hardly. These working people are trying to get a living wage; trying to keep up with the skyrocketing inflation; trying to keep or get health benefits for their families. Let's show these people support and respect when we see them on the picket line.
Our thoughts are with the striking teachers, aides, and other employees of the Grundy County (IL) Special Education Cooperative.

2.26.2008

MORE SNOW

We were supposed to get 4-6 inches last night, but it appears to be more like 2-3. Plus, it's 34 degrees, so it's pretty melty; not bad for us corgis. 4-6 inches would have meant that my woodle would have been freezing in the snow whenever I went outside. My brother Jordy loves snow; but he's a Husky! The Weather Channel says that it's going to be in the 30's and 40's for the next ten days or so. Yippy!

2.25.2008

OSCAR NIGHT

My mommas went to an Oscar party at last night; so we kids watched the Oscars alone and uninterrupted. My sisters aren't really fashion concious, but their outfits are cuter than some of the dreses we saw on the Red Carpet. Do some of these humans really think they look cool?
Not many surprises in the awards ceremony. The rat won best animated feature; my cousin Emy loved that movie; it was the first one that she saw in a theatre. No Country for Old Men swept the main awards, with the Coen brothers winning big! Daniel Day-Louis took best actor, as we expected he would. Who is better at playing a totally believable bad man? Remember Gangs of New York? Don't come to my house!
Anyway, then my mommas came home, and the fun was over. Such is my life.

2.23.2008

RYA'S GOTCHA DAY

Whoops! Yesterday was my sister Rya's Gotcha Day. Five years ago (can it be?), my momma brought her home from her rescue home and family in Washington, IA. I remember that she was so scared and that she obviously realized that I am alpha. She took a while to warm up to my other momma; but my mommas were very patient with her, and eventually earned her trust and her love. She's a very good sister; she shares her treats with me (well, if I take her treat, she does). Anyway, we are very happy she came to stay! Love you, Rya!

WHO WON THE DEBATE?

My mommas are for Barack Obama; of course they thought that he won last night's debate. My momma wants to share this interesting article from SLATE online magazine:
"How do you stop the progress of a stratospheric object filled with rocket fuel? This was the Navy's task Wednesday and Hillary Clinton's task at Thursday night's debate in Austin, Texas. The Navy hit its mark. Hillary Clinton didn't. She didn't really even take a shot.
"Clinton was occasionally aggressive, but not enough to shake up the dynamic that has her nearly tied in polls in the crucial March 4 primary states of Ohio and Texas. Clinton's game plan was to connect with voters, not to tear down Barack Obama. She took pains to show that she understood the concerns of regular folks and that she had plans to address them. She did this well at times, particularly in her final answer of the debate, but Obama turned in one of his strongest performances so far of this campaign. In an even match, the tie goes to the front-runner." Read the entire SLATE article here.

2.21.2008

DEBATE

My mommas are settled down to watch the Democratic debate on CNN. They are looking quite serious; my mommas are hoping that Mr. Obama will win the debate. They don't think he has to try too hard--he just has to not mess up! I hope it goes Obama's way; if it does, I know there will be treats for all afterwards! Go Obama!

2.16.2008

BUZZTIME TRIVIA

Friday nights, my mommas frequently take me to Sports Fans Pizza to play Buzztime Trivia. They take me along because I'm a better trivia player than either one of them! Sometimes, I win a game for them; last night, I was champion of the DUH category. When I win, I get to see my name up on the TV screens all over the place! It's a pretty heady experience for a corgi boy! Once in a while, my mommas take one of the other kids instead of me. BIG MISTAKE! They may do OK, but they never get first place like I do! What can I say? They know I'm their trivia numero uno!

2.13.2008

Happy Valentine's Day!

My pack wants to wish everyone a very happy Valentine's Day! Don't forget to tell the one(s) you love how much they mean to you! I'm hoping to see my girlfriend, Cassie, so I can tell her she's my true love. (blush)

PRIMARIES

It's hard for my mommas to contain their excitement as Barack Obama's momentum is increasing! They have CNN on more than they have since the 9/11 disasters! I find all the political fuss quite boring; but if my mommas are in a good mood, usually it means more treats for me! Go Obama!!!

2.11.2008

SNOW & COLD

This is one of Zorro's mommas. I have to say that I'm totally over the snow and totally over the cold. Really. I can sort of handle the snow; in fact, early on in the season, I even kind of like it. But now, in mid-February, it's getting old. Our street did not get plowed after the latest snow; so there are huge linear ruts running the length of the street. After the snow before the latest one, our street did get plowed; but because of the COLD, we have not been able to shovel the huge hump from the end of the driveway. Thank god we both have SUV's, or I don't think we'd make it out of the driveway! It's making me re-think the whole Prius idea for my next car.

DIABETES (Part 3)

My momma is very happy today! It's because I have had no accidents and I seem to be feeling really good! My problems yesterday must have been caused by the outside foods I ate; so momma is kicking herself (you have to see it to believe it!) for letting me do that. Anyway, everything is okey dokey now, so I'm hoping my momma will give me a big treat!

2.10.2008

NEALEE

A couple of months ago, my momma heard about a sad little kitten whose arm was so badly broken that the arm had to be amputated. Our friend, Mary, was screening applicants for adoption. Only one person applied, and Mary wasn't particularly impressed; so my momma offered to take him.
Momma drove to Washington, IA, to pick up Neale, who was only 15 weeks old at the time. Neale turned out to be Nealee, when at the vet for neutering. Nealee learned very quickly to jump on my momma's desk and chair, and how to live with our other kitties. She and Hector and Snoopy have formed quite a bond.
Rya was very interested in Nealee for the first several weeks. She followed Nealee around the house, sitting out side the room she was in, waiting for her to come out. During this time, Rya and Nealee were forming a bond too. Now, Rya often lies with Nealee, sometimes holding her down and washing her fur and her ears. Such a good big sister.
I pretty much ignore Nealee; but if she gets into my space, I usually chase her a few feet to let her know who's alpha! But I have to admit, she is pretty cute! And a real survivor!

DIABETES Part 2

This afternoon, I had two accidents in the house. I ate some extra foods outside, so my momma is hoping that the foods caused my blood sugar to go up, which then caused me to have an accident. If it's not that, then she is worried that my diabetes is not as regulated as she hoped. Bummer. I can tell I'm not feeling 100% this afternoon.

DIABETES

A few weeks ago, when I started to have some "accidents" in the house, my momma also noticed that I was drinking a lot , and took me to the vet for a check-up. Dr. Hahn checked the sugar in my urine, and found that it was "off the charts" it was so high. She gave me an insulin injection, and did some other tests, and kept me there for the day. When she called my momma with the news, my momma was not really surprised; she had had a couple of diabetic cats over the years, and knew some of the signs.
When my momma picked me up, Dr. gave her a supply of needles and insulin, and instructions on how to live with a diabetic dog. Dogs' systems don't metabolize the insulin as efficiently as cats', so most dogs need two injections per day - at meal times.
I had to go back the following week, to check my levels in order to make sure my blood sugar was getting regulated properly. Dr. said that I needed to have one more unit per shot, so now I get 12 units twice a day. I don't really mind the shots; the needle is so tiny, I hardly feel it. And I can tell that I feel better! No more accidents! Not as much obsessing about food! And I get canned food now, because it has more of the protein that I need.
Some dogs' families are not willing or able to give insulin or in other ways cope with a diabetic dog. Such a situation significantly shortens the dog's life! My moms say it's easy and not very expensive to deal with my diabetes. If you want more information on diabetes in dogs, check out vetinfo4dogs. Your dog will thank you.
